"What did he caption it?" Mateo said into the pillow.
I opened the chat.
There it was, at the top of two hundred messages.
The two of us from behind, in the middle of the lit courtyard, holding hands.
My bare foot coming down on the third flagstone past the fountain.
Under it, my father had written:
"Finally found out what's been clicking in my courtyard every morning since February. Feliz Navidad, familia."
I put the phone face down on my chest.
Mateo lifted his head.
"Well?"
"He knew," I said. "Cass, he heard it. He heard it every single morning."
Mateo started laughing.
He laughed so hard the bed shook, and then I was laughing too.
We lay there in Abuelo's casita with the radio playing a Christmas song and laughed until we cried.
Under the photo, the crew had sent eighty-one crane stickers.
Lupe had written: "LOOKOUT RETIRES. NOTHING LEFT TO LOOK OUT FOR."
