Chapter 4: July Tenth
Mateo said, "Afternoon, Ms. Garza," and walked out past her with my lip balm on his mouth.
Lupe watched him all the way to his truck.
Then she handed me a Coke.
"Taco truck," she said. "Now. You're buying."
The taco truck parked at the Mines Road gate every day at noon.
We took our plates to the tailgate of my F-250 and sat in the only shade on the whole site.
Lupe ate one taco in total silence.
That had never happened in the eleven years I'd known her.
"Say it," I said.
"I'm thinking how to say it."
"Lupe."
"You're sleeping with your stepbrother." She put her taco down. "Your evil stepmother's son. The man who stopped your pour this morning in front of God and the concrete company."
"Keep your voice down."
"I am keeping my voice down. This is me keeping it down."
"He's not my brother," I said. "I met him last Christmas Eve. I was twenty-six. He was thirty. We were never kids in the same house. We were never anything."
"And now you're something."
I picked at the label on my Coke.
"How long?"
"Since February."
Her mouth fell open. "February? Cass, it's October."
"The week they were on their honeymoon. It stormed and the power went out and we were the only two people in that whole house." I shrugged. "That's the whole story."
"That is not the whole story. That is the trailer for the story."
I laughed for the first time all day.
She grinned at me.
"Is it good at least?"
"Lupe."
"I'm asking as your friend. If you're going to risk your inheritance and your father's heart attack, it better be very good."
"It's very good," I said.
