Andre's POV

It was Russ.

The text under his name said, "You and me need to talk before the first. Just us."

I lay awake the rest of that night with Aimee asleep on my chest and the phone face down on the counter.

I knew what Russ wanted.

He needed somebody at that table who'd bet when he said bet.

He'd never ask Laurent.

He thought he still owned me, because I'd stood up at his wedding and taken his markers for twenty years.

I didn't tell her.

Her face could lie, but anybody holding her wrist could feel her heart give her away.

If she knew what I was doing, Russ would read it on her at the table.

So I texted him back from the stairwell at six in the morning.

"Friday noon. Sandpiper bar."

On Friday morning she sat at my counter in my shirt with Laurent's list in front of her and called the car dealer from Mobile.
