Chapter 10: Lease at Will

Maeve's POV

"Not tonight," he said again, and I decided that was an answer I could live with for one more hour.

I slid off the desk on legs that didn't entirely work.

The ledger lay face down on the floor, and the lamp still burned.

His trousers were around his thighs, his shirt open to the waist, and his chest was going up and down like a man's who had run the length of the hill.

I looked at him.

I looked for a long time.

"Sit in the chair," I said.

"Maeve."

"The leather one. Sit."

He pulled his clothes straight with shaking hands, and then thought better of it and left them, and sat.

The old chair took his weight with a creak.

He sat with his big hands on the arms and his head tipped back, and his gray eyes followed me around the desk.

I stood in front of him with my T-shirt gone and my flannel pants low on my hips.

"You said it was my will," I said.

"I did."

"Lease at will, Landlord." I put one knee on the leather beside his thigh. "Say whose will."

"Yours."

"Say it like you mean it."

"It's yours, Maeve." His voice was rough and low. "Every minute of it. The paper's a lie, and that part's the only thing in the house that isn't."

I climbed over him.

I settled onto his lap, facing him, with a knee either side of his hips, and my arms went round his neck.

The leather was cold on my knees.

His skin was hot.
