Chapter 19: The Doorstep

I did not go out right away.

I stood in the hall in Cormick's shirt with my hair down my back and looked at the boy.

"Void by whose word?" I said.

"Mr. Dacey's." The boy twisted his cap. "He says the old men met tonight and called it."

"Did they?"

"I don't know, miss."

"Then you're a poor messenger," Enid said from the landing. "Go and tell him she's dressing."

The boy fled.

I went upstairs and put on my jeans, my boots and my scrub top, and then, over it, the dark wool coat that Enid had given me and I had left on its hook.

I put it on.

I buttoned it to the throat.

Cormick was waiting at the bottom of the stairs.

He had on his black coat and his hat in his hand, and his eyes were steady.

"I'll go out first," he said.

"No."

"Maeve."

"You'll go out beside me." I took the bond from the pocket of the coat, the one with its torn corner, and unfolded it.

It was soft at the creases from being carried.

"It's my paper, too," I said.

We went out on the porch.

It was the middle of the night, black and clear, nine degrees, with the stars out over the headframe.

At the foot of the drive, under the one lamp, stood three cars.

Bram's camel sedan was in front, with its headlights on the house.

Three of his men stood in the beam in their work coats.
