Chapter 10: The Plan

I had my own plan, and it was dated.

I had written it on the back of a hospice mileage log on the twenty-fourth of November, in the cab of my Honda in the Laurel Fork store lot.

I used the nurse's hand I kept for medication orders.

*Dec 6, Sat. 4 a.m.*

Under that I listed what I would need.

The hatchback, with a full tank.

The key to a dying patient's cabin on Beech Ridge Road.

His daughter had given it to me in the spring when he started going downhill, because I was the only one who came.

Two weeks of scrubs.

My father's coat.

A box of prenatal vitamins from the Boone pharmacy, and the number of a midwife in Vilas.

A smoker, a hive tool, and the veil from the springhouse nail.

I looked down at the list, and then I burned it in the ashtray.

I had stayed that long for the reason you stay in a room with a patient who is going to die.

I wanted to be sure.

I wanted to see what the house would do when I was not being sold.

For two weeks I had watched.

The pack called me Luna and put me at the head of the table.

On the first of December I found out what that cost.

The housekeeper set a folded paper beside my plate, in Verna's hand, and did not look at me.
