Chapter 13: Read It Aloud
Ned took the letter.
His hand shook so badly that the old paper rattled.
He did not open it at once.
He turned it over and looked at the long dark stain across the front, and I saw him understand what the stain was.
Nobody on that bank made a sound.
The fire popped, and a log settled in the washtub.
"Edmund," said the Teller, gently. "The pack is waiting."
He broke the seal with his thumbnail.
It was one sheet, folded in thirds and written close in pencil.
He held it to the firelight in both hands.

I had not known I would say it aloud.
He did not look at me.
"Read it," he told himself, and began.
His voice was rough and low, and it did not hold.

By the time you get it I'll be gone, and you mustn't hate me for going.

His name is Wade.
He works the counter at the feed store in Boone, and he's human, and he's the kindest person I ever met.
Daddy found his letters.
He said what he'd do to a man like that."
Ned stopped.
His breath went in and out twice, and I saw the paper tremble.
"Keep going," said the old woman.
"I'm going to Orrin Lowry's," Ned read.
"He's the only Alpha on this ridge who ever spoke to me like I was a person.
