Chapter 29: The Counter
The sun came through the kitchen window at eight in the morning and lay across the counter in a long gold bar.
I was making pancakes in his flannel shirt and nothing else.
Flour was on my forearms, on the counter, and on the end of my nose.
The ring sat in its velvet pouch on the windowsill above the sink, where I had put it the night before.
I had looked at it three times since I got up.
I had not touched it.
Nels came in from the barn with snow on his shoulders and stopped in the doorway.
He took in the shirt, my bare legs, and the flour on my face, and his whole expression changed.
"Good morning," I said.
"Is that my shirt?"
"It was in the way," I said.
"In the way of what?"
"Of me," I said, "wanting to walk around the kitchen in it."
He shut the door with his heel.
