My Stepmother Sold the Farm, So I Married the Man Who Left novel · Chapter 32 of 32
Chapter 32: Spring Planting
The first morning of planting, I woke at four-thirty to an empty side of the bed and a smell of coffee.
I did not panic.
I lay and listened to the house, and I could hear him below me, the scrape of a chair and the clink of a mug.
He was in the kitchen, where he had said he would be.
I came down the back stair in his flannel shirt, with my braid half undone, and found the lamp lit over the table.
Frost covered the window.
Past the glass, the east field lay dark and level, disked and ready, with a pale line of dawn along the ridge.
It was the field the sand company had wanted.
It would be corn by August.
Nels sat in the chair at the end of the table, the one nobody had sat in for six years.
It was the chair I had kept for him.
He had a mug of coffee at his elbow and a pen in his hand.
