Chapter 17: The Ledger

Dee let herself into my apartment on Saturday morning with a bag of biscuits and a legal pad.

"Sit," she said. "Eat. We have eleven vendors and one idiot."

"Which idiot?"

"I'll tell you when I figure out which of you it is."

She was in her scrubs, straight off a night shift in the emergency room.

Her red curls were piled on her head, with a pen behind each ear.

I hadn't slept.

I had spent the night on my own couch with my phone face-up on the cushion.

At four in the morning it had lit up once.

I'm okay. Staying at a motel by the interstate. I need a day. I'm sorry.

I had typed eleven answers and sent none.

Dee read the text over my shoulder and took the phone out of my hand.

"She's alive. Good. Now the ledger."

"Dee."

"No. You're going to cry in a minute, and then you're going to want something to do with your hands, and I'm giving you the something." She set the legal pad in front of me. "Vendors. In order of how mad they'll be."

I took the pen.

It was a relief, honestly.

I'm an accountant, and a pile of numbers has never once left me on a street corner.

The florist went first, because she was the one who would cry.

I called her at nine and told her the wedding was off.

She said "Oh, honey" and then sobbed so hard that I ended up comforting her.
