Chapter 21: The Guest List

Waldburg Street smelled like roses.

I smelled them from the sidewalk, before Romy had even cut the truck's engine.

My father opened the door with a stem in his hand and a look of mild panic.

"Come in," he said. "Watch your feet."

The front hall was full of buckets.

White roses stood in every bucket, a hundred and forty of them, in the hall, the living room, and the downstairs bath.

On the sofa, the florist sat in a pile of ribbon and sobbed into a dish towel.

"I didn't have anywhere else to put them," June said, from the kitchen doorway. "She was going to throw them out."

"I can't," the florist wept. "I just can't. Look at them."

"They're beautiful," said Romy, who had never been good in a crisis involving feelings.

"They're for a wedding that isn't happening," the florist said.

"There's a party," I said.

She looked up from the dish towel.

"What?"

"On the seventh. In the garden, with all one hundred and forty guests. Troy's throwing it. For Romy and me, and for Dad and June." I sat down next to her. "It's not a wedding. But it needs roses."

The florist stared at me.

Then she began to cry harder, but in a happier key.

"Oh, you darling," she said. "A party. With my roses. I'll bring the good ribbon."
