Chapter 7: Getting Ready

On Tuesday morning Romy came to my apartment to shoot me getting ready.

It was a practice run for the real day, she said, so she could test the light.

I lived on the second floor of an old brick building on Taylor Street, with tall windows and a radiator that clanked.

I had cleaned the place twice.

Troy was on the river until noon tomorrow, so we had the whole apartment to ourselves.

I didn't think about what that meant until Romy knocked.

She came in with both cameras and a small folding reflector, and she stood in my front room, looking around.

"You alphabetize your spices," she said.

"By use."

"That's worse."

"Do you want coffee?"

"I brought my own." She put the thermos on my counter, then wandered to the bookshelf and tilted her head. "Tax law. Tax law. A cookbook. A romance novel with a pirate on it."

"That's Dee's."

"Of course it is."

"It's not mine."

"Sure," Romy said, and the corner of her mouth went up.

My bedroom had the best light, so we went in there.

I had hung the wedding gown on the closet door.

It looked like a tall, patient ghost.

Romy opened the curtains all the way and let the morning pour in.

"Okay," she said. "Robe on. I want the in-between moments. The shoes, the earrings, the part where you stop being yourself and start being a bride."

"I don't stop being myself."

"Everybody does for about ten minutes. It's the best part to photograph."

I put on the robe I had bought for the wedding morning, a cream silk one with narrow sleeves.
