Chapter 13: Say It Out Loud

Malcolm read Brynn's text over my shoulder and went to the door before I could speak.

"Don't," I said. "She'll run if she sees you."

"She sent it to your phone at dawn, in the room where you're sleeping."

"She doesn't know where I am."

"Lena, she knows exactly where you are. She's been watching you since the dinner."

I looked at the screen again.

I wrote back: Come to the penthouse. Alone. Nine o'clock.

She answered in a minute: I'm already in the lobby.

She came up in a raincoat over her pajamas, with her hair in a knot and no makeup.

Her eyes were swollen.

She held a cheap black phone in her fist and would not look at Malcolm.

"I took it from the lining of his gym bag at three this morning," she said. "He thinks I'm asleep. I have maybe an hour."

"What is it?"

"His second phone. Every night around two he goes into the bathroom and calls the same number. It's saved as one letter. R."

I took it from her and thumbed it open.

Forty calls in two months, all after midnight.

"I stood outside the door," Brynn said. "He's soft with her. He never talks to me like that. He said, 'She'll sign by spring, and the father's too old to fight it.'"

"Whose father?"

"I don't know. Someone with a company. A daughter."

Malcolm had been watching her from the kitchen counter.

"He's lining up a second heiress," he said. "He doesn't plan to stop at one."

"Why bring this to me?" I asked Brynn.

"Because I know how it ends."

Her voice cracked.

"I lived it. I lived six years of it. I don't want to find out what he does with a second one."
