Chapter 20: The Hearing

Lecture Hall B held three hundred seats, and on the twelfth of December every one of them was taken.

The panel sat on a raised table at the front under a projection screen.

The Dean of Students sat in the middle, grey-haired and unsmiling.

A federation official sat on his left and the referee from the Provincial Meet on his right.

On the screen, enlarged until the text swam, was the laboratory form with its red circle.

Tang sat at the left-hand table in his team jacket, and Fu sat beside him with the green notebook.

Behind them, in rows, was Building 9.

Forty-three swimmers had come in matching jackets, and Ji Hao sat among them in a borrowed one.

Aunt Lin was in the front row with her scarf in her fists.

Cen Mingyu sat at the right-hand table, alone, in a suit.

He had been calm all morning.

When the Dean asked him to state his evidence, he stood up and gave it in a low, steady voice.

"On the sixth of November I went into the warm-up room at about twenty to six to collect my towel."

"I saw Fu Lingchen with a syringe. Tang Zhiyuan was sitting on the bench with his sleeve rolled up."

He did not look at Tang.

"I didn't understand what I'd seen until I read the news."

A murmur ran through the hall.

"Why did you not report it at the time?" asked the federation official.
