Chapter 16: The Dunes
I stayed.
I slept on his narrow bed with my back against his chest.
At five I woke in the dark and he was awake too.
"Come on," I said.
"Where?"
"Somewhere with light."
We drove the length of Park Point to the end, where the road gives out and the dunes begin.
The beach lay gray and empty.
The lake was low and flat under a band of orange, and a freighter sat out on the horizon, not moving.
We climbed the first dune in our coats and sat down in the grass with a blanket around us.
The sand was cold through everything.
I leaned my head on his shoulder.
"I want to say something," Nils said. "And I want you not to stop me."
"All right."
"I said we never met," Nils said.
He kept his eyes on the freighter.
"On the dock. It was the worst lie I've ever told."
"I told it because I was scared, and I wrote it as a rule so it wouldn't look like fear."
