By dark the yard was empty.
The crowd had gone and the gate hung open, with the men's hats still lying in rows on the gravel.
Nobody had picked them up.
My mother and Marit had gone off together in Nils's truck to find a cup of coffee.
They were two women in good coats who had barely spoken all afternoon and seemed to need no more.
Nils and I stayed.
I do not know who suggested it.
We walked down the gravel in the dark with the harbor lights across the water.
The tug stood on the ways with her bow to the lake and the champagne still hanging from the rope.
Her black side shone under the one work lamp.
MARIT.
Next to her, on a second set of ways, stood the half-built hull of the next one.
It was a skeleton of ribs with a scaffold of planks around it.
Nils climbed up first.
He held down a hand.
