Chapter 20: Stall Four, Again

The lock on the fourth stall had never failed once in two years, and tonight it was going to be tested.

It was eleven o'clock on Friday, and the building had been dark since ten.

The men's room on the fourteenth floor smelled of floor wax and pine.

Sota sat on the lid in his shirtsleeves with his trousers open and his phone in his hand.

His ears were the color of a stop sign.

It was panel one, chapter eighty-seven, exactly.

The only difference was the chief.

He was kneeling on the tile in front of him, in a perfect charcoal suit, with his glasses on.

"Read," the chief said.

"I can't."

"You can. Read the page."

Sota looked down at the screen.

It was the draft of next week's chapter, which the chief had sent him from the lift lobby with the single word Forecast.

The first panel showed a stall, and a man on a lid, and a boss on his knees.

Sota's voice came out cracked.

"Panel one. Kenta reads his phone. Chief Kuroda says, You don't need to hold that."

"Continue."

"Panel two." His voice stuck. "Kuroda says, I've been on my knees in this building for two years, and I'd like to be asked."

The chief looked up at him over the rims.

"Ask me, Ichinose."

Sota let the phone fall in his lap.

He put both hands in the chief's hair, which was soft and dark and parted with a ruler.

He pushed it into a mess.

"Chief," he said. "Please. Put your mouth on me."
