Chapter 9: Four Hundred and Twelve
Reiji Takamine had Ichinose against the stair rail, and the light above them went out.
It was a motion-sensor light. It shut off after thirty seconds of nothing, and thirty seconds was how long they had been kissing.
He did not stop.
In the east stairwell, between the thirteenth and fourteenth floors, he kept his mouth on Ichinose's mouth and his hands under Ichinose's shirt.
Then Ichinose stuck one arm out sideways and waved it over his head.
The light came back on.
"It's a very efficient building," Ichinose panted.
"Rule one," Reiji said, against his throat.
"You started it."
"I did not."
"You followed me into the stairwell, Chief."
"You walked into a stairwell at twenty to eleven, on the night before an inspection, with your ears the color of a stop sign."
"I needed air."
"You need a reprimand."
"Then give me one."
Reiji's last thread snapped.
He had sat at that desk for three days with the knowledge in his body.
Ichinose in the lift, Ichinose at the printer saying no, Ichinose across the room with his tie slightly loose.
He had drawn four hundred and twelve pictures of this man in two years.
He had counted them on Saturday night, after Ichinose fell asleep on the futon.
He had counted them.
Four hundred and twelve, and not one of them had the mouth right.
The real one was red and swollen from his teeth, and it said, "Then give me one."
Reiji shoved him back against the cold concrete wall and kissed him until his own knees shook.
He pinned both of Ichinose's wrists above his head in one hand.
With the other he pulled their shirts open, and pressed their bare chests together.
Ichinose's heart hammered against his ribs.
