Chapter 17: Fifteen Miles

The shore road to Fish Creek was fifteen miles of dark pavement with no lights on it.

Britta had rented a cabin there for the week, and I had the address on the back of my hand in ballpoint.

I had walked three miles when I heard the engine.

I knew it before I turned, because I had fixed it with my own waxed thread.

The shuttle came up behind me at walking speed with its headlights low.

It stopped beside me, and the door folded open.

Alister sat at the wheel in his flannel shirt with no coat.

"I'm not getting in," I said.

"I didn't ask you to."

"Then what are you doing?"

"Driving," he said. "Slowly, in the same direction as you. It's a public road."

I shifted the Singer to my other hand and kept walking.

The shuttle crept along beside me at the speed of a bad knee.

We went a quarter mile like that, with the gravel loud under my shoes and the engine ticking.

"You can say it," I said.

"Say what?"

"That you want me to come back. That I'm being foolish. That you'll make it right."

"You aren't being foolish," Alister said. "And I won't make it right tonight, because I can't."
