Chapter 21: Live

At seven o'clock on Saturday the red light over the stage came on and the lawn went silent.

Two hundred people sat in the bleachers in their good coats.

Beyond them, on the black lake, a boat full of cameras idled with its running lights off.

The man with the headset counted down on his fingers.

Then he pointed, and we were live.

I stood in the wings in my green cardigan and a clean pair of slacks.

My glasses hung on their beaded chain, and my pockets were empty.

Nobody had styled me.

Nobody had touched my hair.

Britta had hugged me at the bleachers' edge and gone to sit in the third row.

Across the dark, at the sound desk, Alister stood at Renata's shoulder with his father's watch in his hand.

She had not said a word to him in an hour.

The show ran.

A couple from week one danced.

The judge made a toast.

The goat woman, who had been voted most improved, cried into her bouquet.

At nine fifty-two they brought Dale out.

He took center stage in the navy blazer with the pocket square, under a single warm light.

Four million people were watching him, and I could tell by the way he held his chin that he knew it.
