Chapter 23: Ask Me Where I Live

On Friday afternoon the deputy who had taped the notice to my door put the key in my hand.

"The clerk stamped the deed this morning, Mrs. Quist," he said. "The house is yours."

"Thank you."

"I'm sorry about March."

"It wasn't your doing."

"I watched it on TV with my mother," he said. "She hollered at the screen."

The widow from across the street was waiting on the porch with a casserole and a cardboard box.

"Dale's things," she said. "I packed them Thursday. I didn't want them on your carpet."

She had written his name on the box in permanent marker, and underlined it twice.

Inside, the house smelled like someone else's perfume.

The yellow cherry apron hung on the kitchen hook, with a stain down the front.

I took it off the hook, folded it into the box, and shut the lid.

Then I stood in my own kitchen with the late sun coming through the curtains and listened to the refrigerator hum.

At six a truck pulled up outside, and I knew the engine.

Alister came up the walk with a paper bag in one hand and nothing else.

He stopped at the bottom of the porch steps and looked at the house.

"Ask me where I live," I said through the screen.

He looked at me for a moment.

"Where do you live, Lorna?"
