Chapter 22: The Pre-Show
He walked to his own car and sat in it without starting the engine.
I left him there, because it was his.
On Sunday the Moberly Motors Arena was full for the grand final, all fourteen thousand seats.
The brown and cream was a block behind our bench, and it had grown from forty people with a drum to a few thousand.
Bodie's mother sat in the first row of it, small and nervous, in a borrowed Owls jersey.
His sister sat beside her with a sign on poster board.
It said I COUNT UR STEPS in purple marker.
"My mom drove," Bodie told me at the bench. "He doesn't know."
He waved at his sister, and she waved the sign so hard she hit the man behind her.
Moberly sat front and center, beside a pedestal with the cup on it.
The cup was silver, two feet tall, and it had my name on it three times.
The pre-show desk was at the foot of the stage, and its picture filled the big screen over everybody's heads.
Toni sat at it with her partner, in a black blazer over a T-shirt with no band on it.
She ran the pre-show like she always did, fast and funny, through the brackets and the rosters and the money.
