Chapter 24: Two A.M. Again
At ten minutes to two on Friday morning I turned off the highway onto the gravel road past the Peabody exit.
I let the Camry roll to a stop beside the grain elevator.
There was nothing wrong with the car.
It purred under me, new transmission, full tank, heater on, and I switched off the engine and listened to it tick.
The winter wheat had come up in the stubble since September.
It lay across the dark field in a thin green haze, white at the tips with frost.
The same lamp burned on the same pole.
I took out my phone and dialed the number from memory.
It rang twice.
"Janzen's."
"My car's dead," I said. "County road off Fifty, past the Peabody exit."
There was a silence.
I heard him breathe out, and it was very nearly a laugh.
"Is it," Levi said.
"I think it's the transmission."
"I rebuilt the transmission," he said.
"Then I don't know what's wrong with it. I'm out here and it's two in the morning and I'd like someone to come."
"Stay in the car, ma'am," he said. "Twenty minutes."
It was twenty-two.
I watched the amber lights come over the rise and slow.
The beacons turned the stubble orange and the green wheat orange and the frost orange.
The rollback stopped in front of me with the engine rumbling.
He climbed down with a flashlight in his fist and his sleeves pushed past his elbows.
He put the light on the hood, and then on me through the windshield, and lowered it so it wasn't in my eyes.
I got out.
The cold was clean and sharp.
I stood in front of the Camry in my mother's green cardigan, with my left hand bare and the other in my pocket.
"Tell me what it did," he said.
"It didn't do anything."
"Ma'am?" he said.
"Don't call me ma'am."
He turned the flashlight off.
