Chapter 8: The Kitchen Table
"What do you eat for breakfast?" I asked him on Sunday, in the pickup, on the way across town.
He glanced at me over the wheel.
"Eggs. Same as the ones I made you."
"Where's your father?"
He took a while with that one.
"Dead," he said. "Three years in November. Grain elevator over by Lehigh. I don't talk about it, but I'll tell you if you want."
"I want."
"Later."
"Okay," I said.
He turned onto Cedar Street.
My mother's house stood at the end of the block, white and square, with a deep porch and a dead geranium in a clay pot by the door.
The key was under the pot, where it had been my whole life.
I stood on the porch holding it.
Levi stood behind me with a box in each arm, from the shop.
Two boxes, a roll of tape and a pack of trash bags.
He had brought them without saying why, and I loved him a little for it, and I put that thought away fast.
I opened the door.
The house breathed out at me, cold and shut-up, Pine-Sol and dust and the faint sweet smell of her hand lotion in the hall.
Her quilts lay folded over the back of the couch.
Her reading glasses sat on the side table next to her last library book, with a bookmark in it, a third of the way through.
