"Sheree, I'm standing in a convention hall."
"Then stand still and let me say it."
"Sixty people in this office just watched you on a twenty-foot screen. They want you back. I want you back."
"The corner office is yours. The title is yours. I'll go back to sales and be happy as a pig."
I looked across the hall at Jeb.
He was talking to the Ohio buyer by our booth.
The buyer was laughing at something. Jeb wasn't. He hardly ever laughed at his own jokes.
"Can I call you tomorrow?"
"Torrie Sadler, you've been the boss of this place since it was a card table," Sheree said. "Call me whenever you want."

We ate supper at the counter of a hot dog stand on Clark Street because Jeb wanted to see one.
He put everything on his. Pickle, peppers, the bright green relish.
"This is the best thing in Chicago," he said.
"You haven't seen anything else in Chicago."
"Don't need to."
I told him about Sheree's call between bites.
He listened to all of it without stopping me.
