Chapter 11: The Alley

Calvin's POV

Lark left for the chief's office with a straight back and a folded hold form in her jacket.

I stayed in room twelve with the midwife.

She was awake now, completely, and she kept looking at the door.

"She'll be back," the old woman said. "Not this morning. But before tomorrow."

"I know."

"Take the tin."

I stared at her.

"You said you'd only give it to the executor."

"I said I'd hand it to him in the room. I didn't say I'd carry it there with these knees." She pulled the cookie tin out from under the chair cushion and set it on my lap. It was heavier than it looked. "His office is on Main Street, over the florist. His name's on the lid in my grandfather's own hand. You walk it up the stairs, you give it to his secretary, you don't open it, and you don't let anyone else touch it."

"Why me?"

"Because it names a child, and I'd like the right one to carry it."

I tucked the tin inside my coat.

She patted my cheek.

"Go out the kitchen door. The aide will let you."

I walked the mile to Main Street in the cold, with the tin pressed against my ribs and my hand over it.

Marlow Falls was almost empty. Black Friday sales, I realized. Everyone was at the mall.

I took the alley behind the hardware store because it cut a block off the route.

I was halfway down it when I heard the footsteps.

I turned.

The two men from the care home stood at the mouth of the alley.

Behind me, a van door slid open.

There were three of them, then. I hadn't counted the driver.
