Chapter 13: Her Smile

My phone rang before my father could say another word.

The screen said Denver.

It was my boss, who had never once called me on a Friday.

"Calvin," he said. "Where are you right now?"

"Ohio. Family trouble."

"I figured. HR got a packet an hour ago from an email address nobody recognizes."

My stomach dropped.

"What's in it?"

"A copy of a protective order with your name on it. A police report from Tuesday. And a letter saying you faked the Grand Junction inspection photos."

I looked at Lark.

She mouthed the word: Alibi.

Natasha had gone after the twenty-two photos that proved I was in Colorado on October ninth.

If those were fake, I had signed the power of attorney myself.

"They're real," I said. "Every one."

"I believe you. The company doesn't have to." He sounded miserable. "Legal is suspending you without pay until they review it. I'm sorry, Cal."

"How long?"

"Weeks, probably."

"Pull the raw files off the camera card in my desk. The crew lead stood next to me for every shot."

"I'll call him myself."

"Thank you."

I hung up and stared at the dock through the screen door.

"She took my name," I said. "She took my money. Now she's taking my job."

"She's taking everything you could point to," Lark said.

My father stood up so fast the chair scraped.

"I'm taking the wristbands to the executor today. Right now."

"Dad, she'll be watching his office."

"Then she can watch me walk in." His jaw was set. "I've let her do what she liked for five years. I'm done."

He put the plastic bag in his shirt pocket and buttoned it.

Lark's phone buzzed.

She read the screen and her face went flat.
