Chapter 21: On Scene
"Marlow Falls dispatch," said the radio on Lark's shoulder. "Caller at fourteen Alder reports an intruder in her home."
Lark pressed the button.
"Carmody, on scene," she said. "I'm answering that one in person."
She let go of the button.
She walked across the dining room floor, through eighty silent guests, until she stood in front of my sister.
"Ms. Ellingwood," she said. "You called about an intruder."
"That man." Natasha's arm shook as she pointed at me. "He broke into my house."
"He opened the front door with his own key."
"It's my house."
"The deed is in your mother's name," Lark said. "Mrs. Ellingwood, who owns this house?"
"My husband and I do," my mother said, from the wall. "We always have."
Natasha's mouth opened.
Nothing came out of it.
"I'll tell you what I have," Lark said. She took out her notebook. She did not need to read it, but she wanted the room to see her hold it.
"The bank file. The notary book in your handwriting. A confession from your mother, made in front of the pastor. Three men in county jail who say you hired them to drive Calvin to a locked room."
"They're liars."
"A Subaru titled to Calvin that you drive."
"Calvin let me use it."
"Did he?" Lark asked, and looked at me.
"No," I said.
"A set of threatening texts that Calvin never sent." Lark held out her hand. "I'm taking your phone."
"You have no right."
"I have a warrant request in my pocket that the judge is going to sign tonight, and until then I'm asking nicely."
Natasha clutched the phone to her chest.
