Chapter 10: Rule One

"Tell her to stop what?" I said.

"Whatever she's doing." Wayne kept smiling. "The tower, the helipad, the dream talk. She's been strange for weeks, and you're the only person she listens to."

"I'm not her keeper."

"No, but you're the one who's scaring her."

I looked at his hand.

It was out of his pocket now, hanging loose at his side.

"Wayne," said a voice behind him.

Giles had come down the hall without a sound.

He stood two steps away with his jacket buttoned and his hands empty, and there was no expression on his face at all.

"Mr. Livingston." Wayne turned, still friendly. "We were just talking."

"I heard."

"Family stuff."

"My wife is family," Giles said. "She'd like to go home now. So would I."

For a long moment, nobody moved.

Then Wayne laughed, easily, and stepped back and spread his hands.

"Of course. Sorry, Hallie. I'm a little protective."

"I know."

He went into the dining room whistling.

I realized I was holding my breath, and let it go.

Giles didn't say anything on the way to the car, or on the way up in the elevator.

He opened the penthouse door and followed me in and shut it.

Then he stood in the entry with his hand on the lock and said, "You went into that bathroom knowing what you'd find."

"Yes."

"And you gave her the concealer."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"I don't know," I said, and my voice broke on it.

I hadn't cried in front of anyone since the roof.

He crossed the floor in three steps.

He didn't reach for me.

He stopped close enough that I could feel him, and waited with his hands at his sides.

"Tell me what you want," he said.
