Chapter 5: Double Wedding
"Tell them," I said.
Reese's lipstick stopped halfway to her mouth.
"Go ahead. Tell Papa you died, and I died, and the two of us woke up in the same week." I dried my hands on a linen towel. "Tell Giles. See who they send for first, me or you."
"You wouldn't dare."
"I don't have to. You've been back three weeks, Reese, and you still haven't said a word to anyone. You know exactly how it sounds."
Her jaw worked.
"You'll give me the list," she said. "Eventually."
"No, I won't."
I unlocked the door and walked out.
My knees held until I reached the corridor, and then I put my back against the wall and breathed.
She was right about one thing.
She would not stay quiet forever.
The wedding was held the next Saturday in my father's garden, under a white tent, in front of two hundred guests.
My father was giving away both daughters, one after the other.
He cried through the first one, and so did half the front row.
Reese walked down the aisle in ivory silk with her hair down and her eyes shining.
She took Wayne's hands, and she said her vows in a clear, loving voice, and I thought, she is very good.
Wayne said his in a smaller voice.
He kept looking at me, and it made me tired.
When the officiant said "you may kiss," they kissed, and everyone applauded.
Then it was my turn.
I walked the same path in a plain white dress, alone, because my father was still blowing his nose in the front row.
