Chapter 13: Sumi

Hinata did not move until the old man called her name a third time.

"Lady Koyama. The light is coming."

"I know," she said, in a voice that came out thin.

Sumi lay with his chin on her knee and his eyes fixed on her face.

They were the same gold eyes she had looked into for a week.

She had thought she knew what was behind them, and she had been wrong.

"Sumi," she said very low. "Was that you, just now? At the end?"

He blinked slowly.

Then one huge forepaw lifted from the straw and came down on the stone with a soft, clear tap.

One tap.

She let out her breath.

"Okay. Okay. We'll talk about this properly. First we get out of here."

She turned the key under his jaw.

The silver collar sprang open and the runes went dark, and she tucked it into her tunic.

A closed collar burned him at the yard line, and an open one could not.

Ambrose was waiting in the north drain with a donkey cart full of sacks.

Sumi climbed in without being asked and lay flat in the straw.

She pulled the sacking over him and sat on the cart bench with her hand pressed on his back.

Nobody stopped them.

Nobody looks twice at an old steward with a load of sacks.
