Chapter 6: The Thread

I took out my own phone and photographed the screen, one page at a time, with my thumb steady and my pulse loud in my ears.

Fourteen pictures.

The bathroom door clicked open just as I slid the last one into my pocket.

I was already in the corridor with my hand on the knob, pulling the bedroom door closed behind me.

I heard Bryson's voice through the wood, bright and puzzled.

"Pip? Did you hear something?"

I walked back to my room, and I locked the door this time.

At dusk the next evening the court gathered in the long hall for its first meal of the night.

The ministers sat along both sides of a table forty feet long, and Rooke took his place at the head, because the king's chair at the other end was empty.

I came in late on purpose.

Hester followed me in and stood against the wall, with her keys.

Pippa sat halfway down the table in a pale dress, and Bryson sat beside her, looking tired and happy.

She saw me and gave me a tender, wet-eyed smile.

"Imogen, come sit. I saved you a place."

I stayed standing at the head of the room.

"Thank you," I said. "I'd like to ask you something first. In front of everyone."

The ministers stopped chewing.

Rooke put down his knife and fork.

"Pippa," I said. "Who is R?"

I watched it land.

Her smile held for half a second, then slipped, and her fingers closed hard on her napkin.

"I don't know what you mean."

"Bryson doesn't, either," I said. "He's very good at not knowing."
