Chapter 14: Boathouse

The brass key turned on the first try.

The boathouse door swung inward on a breath of cold, dusty air.

Sebastian dragged me inside and shoved it shut against the wind.

Behind us, the first real snow of the year came down so thick the lake disappeared.

It was a single long room with a loft above, a rowing skiff upside down on trestles, and a cast-iron stove in the corner.

My grandfather's coat still hung on a nail by the door.

I put my hand on it.

It smelled of pipe smoke and pine.

"Light the stove," Sebastian said gently. "I'll find the lantern."

By the time the iron began to tick with heat, the world outside was a white roar.

We were not going anywhere.

There was a cot along the back wall and a pile of gray army blankets.

A steamer trunk sat under the loft stairs.

I looked at the trunk.

Sebastian looked at me.

"Tomorrow," he said.

"Tomorrow."

I turned to him in the stove light, and my heart was a drum.

"You've got thirty-one," I said.

"Ingrid"

"I'm going to feed you."

He stood very still.

"You won't stop me," I said. "You're not that strong yet."

His laugh was low and raw.

"No," he said. "I'm not."

I took off my coat and let it fall.

I took off my jacket, my shirt, my boots, and he watched every piece of it hit the floor.

He didn't touch me.

When I stood bare in front of the stove, shaking a little with cold and want, he came close and went down on his knees in front of me.
