Chapter 17: Guards at the Door

"There are two guards in the corridor," Sebastian whispered.

His mouth was against my ear, and his hands were already under my wet jacket.

"They'll hear."

"Then we'll be quiet."

"Can you be quiet?"

I felt him smile against my neck.

"Can you?"

I thought of the boathouse, the vault, the roof, and the sounds I had made in all of them.

"No," I admitted.

"Then I'll help."

He peeled the jacket off my shoulders and let it drop.

Outside the door, a boot scraped on stone.

We both froze.

The boot moved on.

He backed me across the study, one slow step at a time, until the back of my knees touched the leather armchair by the dead fireplace.

He sat me down on its edge.

Then he knelt and began to unlace my boots.

I watched his bent head, the silver-fair hair, the long pale fingers moving over the laces.

It was a ridiculous thing to be turned on by, and I was turned on to the bone.

He drew off my boots, my socks, my pants.

I sat in the chair in my shirt, shaking, and he looked up at me.

"I have not been afraid in eighty-five years," he said, very low.

"You aren't afraid."

"I am terrified. I am more afraid than I've ever been." He laid his cheek on my knee. "Not of Venn. Of losing this."
