Chapter 24: First Light
I woke up in sunlight.
For a moment I did not know why that was strange.
Then I remembered that Sebastian's room faced east, and that for eighty-five years he had hung a blackout curtain over that window.
The curtain was open.
The light poured across the bed in a long gold bar, and he lay in the middle of it, on his side, watching me.
He was not burning.
He was not gray.
He looked like a man of thirty-one who had slept for the first time in his life.
"Good morning, Captain," he said.
"You're in the sun."
"I noticed."
"Does it hurt?"
"It's warm." He smiled, slow and amazed. "I forgot it was warm."
I put my palm against his chest.
Under it, his heart beat, steady and strong.
"The Ledger says the tithe is shared," I said. "So we're even."
"We are never even." He kissed my forehead. "But I will spend the rest of my life trying."
I curled into him.
His arms went around me, and the sun lay across both of us.
His hand slid down my back and settled on the curve of my hip.
"Did you sleep?" he asked.
"Like the dead."
"Don't say that."
