Chapter 4: Drill

Formation was at five, and I got there at four fifty-eight.

My legs felt strange, light and springy.

Fourth Company stood in four ragged rows on the wet parade ground.

The girl next to me leaned over and whispered, "Are you the Null?"

"Yes."

"Poppy Dunning. I'm the one the stone called a flicker." She grinned, round-faced and curly-haired and unbothered. "We're bunkmates, by the way. I snore."

"I don't care."

"That's the right answer."

Across the yard, the cadets of Second Company were pointing at us and laughing.

Poppy waved at them with both hands.

Then Major Rook came out of the officers' tower, and the whole yard went quiet.

He wore his dress grey, and he walked down the line with his hands behind his back.

He didn't look at me.

Not once.

He stopped at the end of the row and said, "Obstacle course. Full kit. Last place cleans the latrines."

The cadets groaned.

Poppy muttered, "He always says that, and he's always last place's problem."

"Go," said the major.

I ran.

Two days ago I would have been last by a hundred yards.

I hit the first wall, a twelve-foot timber face, and my hands found the top edge.

I went over it.

Behind me, somebody swore.

The rope climb came next.

I went up it hand over hand, no feet, and my arms didn't burn.
