Chapter 18: Silk

At midnight he lit one candle on the cake and told me to make a wish.

I never got to blow it out.

He set the cake down on the nightstand, took the candle in his fingers, and pinched the flame between them.

"Happy birthday, Lenora," he said in the dark.

"You didn't let me wish."

"You'll get your wish."

"What is it?"

"You wish to be tied to this bed and made to come until the sun comes up."

My breath stopped.

"How do you know?"

"You told me. In the study, with your mouth shut. I could hear it."

I laughed shakily.

"Do it," I said.

He turned on the lamp.

On the quilt lay six long scarves of silk, in deep red and navy and gold, folded in a row.

Beside them lay a black blindfold, and a small glass bowl of ice.

I looked at them and felt my whole body go liquid.

"You planned this."

"For nine days."

"You are a very dangerous man."

"Take off your clothes."

I undressed in front of him in the lamplight.

I did it slowly, with my eyes on his face.

He had taken off his jacket and rolled his sleeves.

He stood very still, watching every button, every zipper, every inch as it came free.

When I stood naked he picked up the blindfold.

"Tell me what you want from me tonight."

"Blind me. Tie me down. I want all of it."

He slid the silk over my eyes and tied it behind my head.

The world went black.
