Chapter 22: What She Read

I read it on the steps of the Chatham County courthouse, line by line, with a pen in my hand.

It was an application for a marriage license, three pages, with the seal of the Probate Court at the top.

It named Lenora Elise Calhoun, thirty, unmarried.

It named Auden James Perrault, thirty-eight, unmarried.

It asked for the date, the place.

The signature of two adults who swore that neither party was married to anyone else.

I read the oath twice.

"You're not going to skim?" Auden said.

"I signed one piece of paper without reading it."

"I know."

"I'm reading this one slowly."

"I'd be disappointed otherwise."

On page three, at the bottom, there was a line in his handwriting, tiny, under the date.

*This one is real. Check it yourself.*

I looked up.

He stood two steps below me in a dark suit with the wind in the flags behind him, holding a small velvet box he hadn't opened.

"You said you'd ask me properly," I said.

"I am."

"On the courthouse steps."

"On the courthouse steps." He opened the box.

The ring was a plain gold band with a single row of small blue sapphires, the deep blue of the harbor flag.
