Chapter 12: Delmont Street
We pulled onto Delmont Street a little before three in the morning.
Every porch light on the block was on.
The neighbors stood on their lawns in bathrobes and coats over pajamas.
A sheriff's cruiser with its lights turning had been parked at my mother's curb for two hours.
A young deputy stood on her porch with a clipboard.
My mother stood in the doorway in her green coat with the door half open behind her.
She was holding a single sheet of paper in both hands.
"Damon," she said, not turning.
"I'm here."
"This young man has been very polite about it."
"Ma'am," the deputy said, looking at me, "I'm only serving the notice. It says the property is in default, and the new note holder has the right to take possession in thirty days."
"She's never missed a payment," I said.
"I'm sure that's what you believe, sir. It's what the paper says."
"May I see it?"
He handed it over.
It had Brooks's holding company across the top, the same one that held my shares.
Below that was a column of three missed payments.
The dates were from the summer.
Every one of them was a month my mother had mailed a check.
"I have the canceled checks in a kitchen drawer," my mother said.
"You can show them to a judge, ma'am."
"I would like to show them to my neighbors," she said.
She came down the porch steps.
She was sixty-three years old, five foot three, and she had never in her life raised her voice at a stranger.
She turned to face the lawns.
"Good evening, everyone. I'm sorry about the noise."
Somebody in the dark said, "That's all right, Hazel."
"My son's business partner bought my mortgage on Friday," my mother said. "That's Brooks Teller. He used to eat dinner at my table on Thursdays. He says I haven't paid for three months."
