Chapter 11: Two Years

His thumb stopped on my cheekbone.

"Say it again," Clark said.

His voice was very low, and it wasn't kind.

"Clark..."

"Say what you said."

"You always say that."

I said it in the whisper, because I couldn't make it sound any other way.

He sat up.

I felt the blanket slide off, and the couch springs creak, and then the cold air where he had been.

The lightning flashed once, silent, far away, and I saw his face for half a second.

He was staring at me as though I had turned into a stranger in front of him.

"It was you," he said. "The voice. For six months."

"Yes."

He stood up and walked to the window, a dark shape against the glass, and put both hands on the frame.

I got off the couch and stood with the blanket held against my chest.

"Tell me," he said, without turning around. "All of it. Don't leave anything out to make it easier."

So I told him.

I told him that Brooke came home from a party one night last April, with her phone ringing and her mascara on her chin.

She had pushed it into my hand and said, "Just talk to him. He's sad. He only wants to hear a voice."

I told him I picked up, and said hello.

He had said, *Brooke?* and I had said, *Yes,* because Brooke was standing over me whispering *say yes.*

I told him I had meant to do it once.

"He asked how my day was," I said. "And nobody had asked me that in months."

He didn't move.

"The next night Brooke handed it to me again. She said the day texts were hers. The nights were mine. I told myself I was doing her a favor. Then I told myself it wasn't hurting anyone."

"It was hurting me."

"I know."

"You knew I thought you were her."
