Brooke was on our porch at six the next morning, sitting on the top step with her knees pulled up.
I came out in Clark's coat with the drive in my fist.
"Give it back," she said.
She didn't say it like a threat.
She said it with quiet desperation.
"No."
"Cecelia, please. I wasn't thinking. If Rhett knows I gave it to you, he'll..."
"Rhett stood up in front of the whole commons and quit."
"That's why." Her laugh broke in the middle. "That's why he's worse."
She pushed up her sleeve.
There was a ring of faded yellow marks on her wrist, four of them in a row.
"He took my phone Tuesday night," she said.
"He read every text I ever sent."
"He's tracked me since March."
"When I told him I wanted out, he said nobody leaves."
"He said Dax would put my name on the next Vott Court if I tried."
I stared at the marks.
All my anger had a place to sit down, and it didn't sit.
"You sold six months of my nights to Dax," I said.
