Chapter 10: Three in the Morning

Willa's POV

At three in the morning someone knocked on the garage door, slowly, with the flat of a hand.

I had been lying on the cot in the dark, awake, with my mouth still sore from Mason's.

I got up, pulled on Roz's old cardigan and opened the door a crack.

Lance sat on Roz's front steps in the rain, in his good coat, with a bottle between his feet.

He had no photographer with him, and no smile.

"Go home, Lance."

"I can't."

"Then sit there. I'm going to bed."

"Wills." His voice cracked on it. "Please. Five minutes, and then I'll go, and you never have to see me again if you don't want to."

Behind me the screen door of the house opened with a bang.

Roz stood on the back step in a flannel robe, holding a rolling pin.

"I'll be right here," she called. "Say a wrong word and I'll finish what the hose started."

"It's fine," I said.

"It's not fine. It's three a.m. I'm only saying I'm armed."

She stayed where she was.

I walked across the wet grass to the front steps, and stopped three feet from him.

In my cardigan pocket, my thumb found my phone and pressed the red circle.

I did not know why I did it, except that I thought I would need it later.

"Talk," I said.

Lance rubbed both hands over his face.

"I'm scared," he said. "Camille's going to ruin me on Friday, and she's going to ruin you, and I came to tell you something I should've told you the first night."

"Which night?"

"The first night. The night I met you."
