Chapter 18: No, Lance

They took Camille out through the stage door, and she did not look back at the room.

My stepfather went with her, one hand under her elbow.

I stood in the long back corridor where she had patted my cheek an hour ago, and my legs would not stop shaking.

Mason leaned against the wall beside me and said nothing.

His shoulder was against mine.

I was glad he did not speak, because every word in my head was in the wrong order.

"Wills."

Lance stood at the end of the hall with his tie hanging open.

There were no reporters in the corridor.

The Guild had shut the doors, and security stood at both ends.

He walked toward me slowly, with his hands out where I could see them.

"Stop there," Mason said.

"I just need two minutes."

"You've had six years."

"Mason," I said. "It's all right."

He looked at me.

"I want to hear what he does with it," I said.

Mason stepped back one pace, no more.

Lance came to a stop three feet away, and his eyes were already running.

"I told them," he said. "I stood up in front of the whole room and I told them. I'll tell the Academy. I'll tell the board, I'll sign anything. I'll tell the press."

"You told them because they were watching you."

"I told them because it's true."

"You told them after the tape."

"No, before. I was standing before the tape." His voice cracked. "Wills, I was always going to tell you. I swear it on my mother. I never wanted any of it. I wanted you."

"You wanted my dinner and my pages," I said. "You wanted me to keep the house."

"I loved you."

"I know you did."

It surprised him.
