Chapter 16: Sal's Move
Katia grabbed my sleeve.
"Don't go."
"I'm going."
"Then take this."
She pushed her phone into my coat pocket, and the screen was lit with a small red dot.
"It's recording," she whispered. "It'll hold two hours. Keep the microphone end up."
I squeezed her hand and crossed the road.
Sal Ferraro let me come all the way to the fender before he straightened.
He looked rested and pleased, in a camel coat with a gold ring on his little finger and a toothpick in the corner of his mouth.
"You went to see the Don at the boy's grave," he said. "Sentimental old man. Did he cry?"
"What do you want, Mr. Ferraro?"
"To save you a great deal of trouble."
He took the toothpick out and studied it.
"The Table meets next Sunday, after the family dinner. Nine captains. Five of them will do what I tell them. By our law, a man who fails the last act has his seat put to a vote."
