Chapter 12: Coward

Trent's mother saw the photo over my shoulder.

She went white under her makeup.

"I didn't," she said. "I didn't put that there. I made it last night. He came by. He carried it to the car for me."

"Who did?"

She didn't answer.

She didn't have to.

She walked to her car without the dish and drove away with the schnauzer woman still filming.

Nonna took the photo out of my hand and looked at it.

"Ugly coat," she said. "I should have worn the blue."

Then her hand started to shake, and she pressed it flat against Pope's back so I wouldn't see.

I saw.

I knelt on the step and put my arms around her and Pope at the same time.

Nonna smelled like rosewater and cat food.

"I'm done," I said into her shoulder.

"Done with what?"

"Hiding."

Elio was standing at the bottom of the step.

"Viola. Get her in the car."

"I'm going to get her in the car," I said, standing up. "And then I'm going to get the bullet out of my safe, and you're going to drive me to the federal building."

His face went still.

"No."

"He photographed my grandmother at a bus stop at five in the morning. Next time he won't use a camera."

"I'll deal with it."

"With a body? You swore."

The old men across the street were still watching.

Elio looked at them, then at Nonna, then at me.

"I'll drive you," he said. "I won't go in."

He went in.

The federal prosecutor's office was on the eighth floor of a gray building downtown, all carpet and flags.

The prosecutor was a small woman in her fifties with reading glasses on a cord and a voice.

She had heard of Elio Massaro.

She looked at him across her desk.

I put the specimen jar on her blotter.

BISCUIT, foreign body, 6/7.
