Chapter 8: The Chapel Table
The director called the meeting for ten o'clock on Tuesday morning, in the chapel, because it was the only room big enough.
It had six pews, a plastic cross, and a window with a view of the parking lot.
I came in straight off no sleep, with the index card folded in my fist.
Declan came in behind me and sat in the last pew.
I had asked him to stay out of it.
He had said he would, and then he had sat down where I could feel him.
The director stood at the front with a folder.
Constance and Margo took the first pew.
Their lawyer sat between them with his leather case on his knees.
"I called everyone here because there's a conflict over my patient's care," the director said. "I want to resolve it kindly."
Constance made a small noise through her nose.
"Mrs. Sayer would like to make an offer," the director said, with the air of someone getting through a script. "Go ahead."
The lawyer stood.
"Mrs. Constance Sayer, through the Lakeshore Hospital Foundation, will pay for the transfer of the patient to Lakeshore General's long-term respiratory unit in Milwaukee. It is the best in the state. All costs covered."
"For how long?" I asked.
"For life."
I looked at Constance.
She looked right back with her chin up.
"There's one issue," the lawyer said. "The designated health care proxy is a woman who is legally deceased. Her authority isn't valid until the Wisconsin court reinstates her. In the meantime, the family is entitled to act."
"The family," I said.
"Mrs. Sayer is the child's grandmother, and she is prepared to act."
