Chapter 14: The Queen's Tent
They took us to the Queen with our hands in plain sight.
Her tent stood in the middle of a field of tents, a great grey canvas hall with the black hawk stitched on the roof.
Soldiers lined both sides of the aisle to it, ten deep, in grey mail, and not one of them looked at Corwin.
They all looked at me.
I walked down that aisle in a flour-stained coat with a king's ring hanging off my thumb.
Garran walked at my shoulder and muttered, "Tell me when to start swinging."
"You don't swing," I said. "You stay with the boy."
Inside, the Queen of Highcrest sat on a plain wooden chair with six captains standing behind her.
She was a tall woman of fifty-six with an iron-grey braid and black wool to her throat.
She had Corwin's grey eyes, in a face that had stopped crying a long time ago.
She did not stand.
"Mother," Corwin said.
"You sent me no word for a month," she said, in a level voice.
"I sent you for a claim, and my captains tell me you've got a bed in a cell."
