Chapter 16: The Tea
Corwin crossed the bridge and took Brogan by the front of his cloak.
Brogan's feet left the stones.
"You," Brogan said, and the pleasant voice cracked down the middle.
Corwin held him over the black water, one-handed, with the other hand open at his side.
I could see what it cost him not to close it.
"My brother was a better man than you will ever be," he said, very low.
"I'm going to let you go."
"You are going to ride back to Grayhall and stand in the Moon Hall at the Wolf Moon, and tell the truth under the stone."
"You'll scream when you lie. I want to hear it."
He set Brogan down on the planks, and Brogan ran.
He ran badly, on legs that wouldn't hold him, toward a horse tied in the willows.
Corwin watched him go with his jaw white.
"Truce," he said to me, through his teeth.
"Truce," I said, and put my hand on his chest, where his heart was slamming.
