Chapter 18: Sunset Hearing
The doors of the Moon Hall were closing when we reached them.
Two guards in crimson leaned their shoulders into the doors.
The gap between the oak slabs was no wider than a man.
The sun sat on the roofline across the square, a red coin about to fall.
My horse had been ridden to a standstill under me, and I slid off it and ran.
"The petitioner stands at the door!" I shouted. "Look at the light!"
A long red bar lay across the steps at my feet, with the shadow of the lintel creeping up it.
I threw myself at the gap and jammed my arm in it up to the shoulder.
The oak ground against my ribs, and a guard swore in my ear.
"Let go, Highness."
"Not yet."
Garran hit the other leaf with his shoulder, and twenty gate guards hit it after him.
The doors flew open.
The guards stumbled back.
Behind me the packs of the north came up the steps three abreast, in leather and furs, with wolves at their heels.
