Chapter 19: The Night Before
My father was waiting for me on the porch at nine o'clock Friday night.
He sat in the old kitchen chair he had dragged out there, with his brace on and a cup of tea steaming on the rail.
The finals started at ten in the morning.
I had a bag packed and four pages of notes in my pocket, and I could not sit still.
"Sit," he said.
I sat on the step below him.
For a while we listened to the crickets.
"Your mother used to do this," he said. "The night before anything. She would pace the porch until I told her to sit."
I looked at my hands.
He almost never spoke of her.
"She would've been proud of you," he said. "I don't say it enough."
"Dad, you say it every day."
"I say it with a thermos," he said. "It's not the same."
I laughed, and my eyes stung.
He drank his tea.
"That boy in my barn," he said.
